Paulo Chagas and Marcelo Armani’s Aproximadamente 9.363 KM / 158 MB (Mansarda) is an interesting concept – an improvisational album built upon files exchanged over the internet. On the face of it, the concept seems odd, maybe even contrived, but it works. Chagas’ work on oboe, flue and saxophone is all over the place, tracks built upon tracks, sounds and squelches that wander in a charged ferocity that are layered over Armani’s disjointed and engaging drumming. Chagas and Armani’s album reminds me of a soundtrack to a 60s psychedelic movie that incorporates the meaning of out-there.
