The Repetition(Beauty) of Experiments

Version 1.01: The following review of Miquel Parera’s Empty Space on the netlabel tecnoNucleo is presented to the reader it’s various reworked versions.

If you are unfamiliar with Miquel Parera’s work, you shouldn’t be. He runs the excellent blog Music Is The Time of Numbers which is one of my go-to resources for experimental music. Not only does Parera write short wonderful reviews, he also publishes lists of recent experimental releases as well as a monthly compilation of experimental music. If you follow me on Twitter (@dpnem), you know I’ve been ranting about the overuse and misuse of the word experimental in its relation to music. Gurdonark rightly tweeted that most people use experimental to mean different. But Parera gets it, he gets the true meaning of experimental.

And, lastly, on Parera’s blog, he releases some wonderful drones. Parera uses drones to search through sound. He extracts different layers of feelings and frequencies from his tracks that he re-works and re-imagines time after time. From his re-interpretations, Paraera is able to build new memories from the same worlds of sound. Over the last several weeks, I have been listening to track after track of Parera’s work, playing a new interpretation and then playing the original. I go back and forth making myself dizzy with sound. There is a beauty in Parera’s sound explorations.  Though this review should have focused on Empty Space, which is a great introduction to his work, Parera’s other sound explorations need to be downloaded by the readers as they touch the abstraction of sound.

Version 0.2: The following review of Miquel Parera Jaques’ Empty Space on the netlabel tecnoNucleo is presented to the reader it’s various reworked versions.

If you are unfamiliar with Miquel Parera Jaques’s work, you shouldn’t be. He runs the excellent blog Music Is The Time of Numbers which is one of my go to resources for experimental music on netlabels. Not only does Parera write these short wonderful reviews, he also publishes lists of recent experimental releases as well as releasing a monthly compilation of experimental music. Before I go any further, if you follow me on Twitter (@dpnem), you know I’ve been ranting about the overuse and misuse of the word experimental in its relation to music. Gurdonark rightly tweeted that most people use experimental to mean different.

And, lastly, on Parera’s blog, he releases these wonderful drones. But these are just your regular drones, Parera is searching through sound. He is extracting different layers of feelings and frequencies from tracks that he reworks and re-imagines time after time. Version 0.1: What follows is a review of Miquel Parera’s Jaques’ “nxN001 Empty Space” () reworked several times.

I’m trying to force myself to write here as there has been some difficult family issues over the last few weeks. The good news is that thy are getting resolved. But enough about me. If you are unfamiliar with Miquel Parera Jaques’s work, you shouldn’t be. There are two things he does which you should be aware of. First he reviews several experimental works and along with that he puts out compendium of experimental work in various artists formats along with lists of links and such. Second, but not least, Parera (I think I got this Spaish last name thing right), makes experimental drones. I know the word experimental is overused – if you read my twitter account – and as Gurdonck mentions, most people use experimental to mean different. Parera really , Parera’s work really exemplifies the true meaning of found. In the Introduction of “Audito Cutlure”, there is a quote from Chris Cutler which talks about “the memory of sound.” Paraera work is based on the exploration of sound at specific frequencies and then he goes back and reworks or reinterprets these tracks as he tries to dig deep into the sound and brings out new interpretations  or new memories. Parera’s – I’ve been listening to many of the thoraces that Parera has released over the last 9 months and I’m absolutely dumbfounded over the beauty of these works. Though this review focuses on Empty Space, Parera’s other sound explorations on ComputerMusicNeix needs to be downloaded by the readers as they touch upon the idea and the abstraction of sound.
